Welcome back, we are excited to welcome new registrants. With that said, we are dedicated to creating a safe and secure learning environment at the CLIU. We are asking for students and parents to conduct a self-check each day before attending any lessons. Guidelines for check and symptoms can be found at PA Department of Health. Students should not report for lessons, if they are displaying any symptoms of the COVID-19 virus or if they have been potentially exposed to the virus. Additionally, if you have traveled to any states on the list PADOH: Travelers, we ask that you do not participate in lessons for 14 days. Thank you and stay safe.
The Carbon Lehigh Intermediate Unit #21(CLIU) provides students through grade 12 with a program in Driver Education. We offer a Behind-the-Wheel (BTW) program and partner with the Edward Savioz Driver Training School for an online theory course throughout the school year.
The Behind-the-Wheel instruction is given in a dual-control car, which has a brake pedal for the instructor's use as well as other special safety equipment. Our goal in providing this program is to prepare competent, skillful, and responsible young drivers who will have the right attitude toward safe driving and will, therefore, assist in reducing accidents on the streets and highways.
The online theory course is available in a fully online format available at any time during the school year. The goal of the online theory program is to provide new drivers with a strong base to begin their practice. Students will learn about driving laws, road signs and signals, components of the car, and emergency preparedness.
Behind the Wheel lesson availability varies throughout the school year based on the number of registered students, instructor availability, and weather conditions. New sessions are added frequently by instructors as they determine availability. Behind-the Wheel Training
Our goal in providing the Behind-the-Wheel program is to prepare competent, skillful, and responsible young drivers who will have the right attitude toward safe driving and will, therefore, assist in reducing accidents on the streets and highways. Lessons for this course are available year round. All students must be 16 years of age and have secured either a learner's permit or driver's license. On-the-Road Skills Training consists of 6 hours of individual behind-the-wheel training. Each lesson consists of skills that will build the student's driving skills and should be practiced between sessions.
Prior to beginning this program, it is recommended that students complete at least 10 hours of practice in becoming familiar with preparing for driving, understanding the motor vehicle functions, basic motion, steering, and signaling. Having advance preparation assists in the development of competent, confident, and safe drivers. Throughout the time frame of the lessons, students should be completing at least 60 hours of practice in addition to the instructed hours per PA Department of Motor Vehicles requirements. The PA Department of Motor Vehicles has some excellent resources including a guidebook for parents assisting in the practice of driving skills on their Teen Safety Tips page.
Students may be eligible for a 10-20 percent reduction in insurance premium costs upon completion of an approved Driver Education program. Please check with your individual insurance company.
Upon registration, students will be able to access the instructor calendar to select dates and times for lessons. All lessons begin and end at one of our approved pick-up locations. Testing must be completed at CLIU - Schnecksville or Parkland High School. If the scheduling calendar for a site is blank, this indicates that all available lessons are currently full. Please continue to check the schedule or enable notification in your account as instructors add additional sessions as they are available and student cancellations create open spaces as well.
**Please note: Beginning September 1, 2017, all eligible test students will be required to complete a parallel parking component during the Road Test.**
Required Documents:
- Valid PA Learner's Permit
*Additional lesson hours may be purchased at a rate of $55.00 per hour once you have registered for the initial training.

While many teens crash because of risk-taking, most crashes occur because the novice behind the wheel doesn’t have the skills or experience needed to recognize a hazard and take corrective action. Researchers at the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia point to driver error as the most prevalent reason for teen crashes. The Pennsylvania Teen Safe Driving Resource Guide was developed in partnership with Penn DOT, The Pennsylvania DUI Association, and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to assist teens, parents, and educators with resources to guide and assist novice drivers in navigating the highway transportation system in becoming a safe, responsible driver.
In case of inclement weather, lessons are cancelled when the site of the lesson is closed or has early dismissal.
